Bueno, sobre los procedimientos cosméticos que ellos prefieren hablamos o hoy en Prevenir es Vivir, con el Cirujano Oculoplástico José Raúl Montes. Buenos días. Bienvenido.
Dr. JRM:
Buenos días Ivonne y bienvenidos a todos.
Ivonne:
Bueno, los tiempos cambian y los hombres están tomando más consciencia sobre lo importante que es la apariencia, pero usted tiene que revelarnos cuáles son esos procedimientos que más recurren los hombres y el porqué.
Dr. JRM:
A eso venimos. Vamos a empezar a ver un menú de lo que los hombres están pidiendo, sobre todo en los procedimientos que tienen que ver con la cara. Sabemos que principalmente los hombres están buscando despejarse de lo que son las bolsas en los párpados inferiores. ¿Por qué? Porque los hace ver cansados y con más edad y los hace ver menos competitivos en el mundo laboral; también los párpados superiores. Aquí vemos un ejemplo de cómo un paciente cambia con cirugía de los párpados. Estos son procedimientos que son cirugías, pero ahora vamos ir a los que son inyectables.
El Botox® sigue siendo una de las sustancias que los hombres buscan para mejorar obviamente la expresión y aquí vemos tratamientos para mejorar las bolsas sin cirugía, inyectando en esa depresión que está debajo del ojo que hace formar lo que llamamos ojera o ver el ojo cansado. Esto se inyecta no solamente en esa depresión; también se inyecta en la mejilla y hace que esa transición entre el párpado y la mejilla se suavice. No tiene que ser un hombre de más edad, jóvenes (para que) también tengan una apariencia de más descanso.
Por supuesto, al hombre no le gusta la papada, porque no se ve bien, se ve con más edad y la camisa y la corbata no le sirve. Eso se está utilizando mucho para la inyección y luego, para definir la mandíbula, se están utilizando sustancias de relleno para definir y complementar esos tratamientos del cuello. Otra cosa más que se está haciendo, se están utilizando esos inyectables de la cara ahora para el cuerpo, esos dichosos ‘love handles’ que es como se llaman o protuberancias grasas en el abdomen. También se están inyectando con Kybella®, en un procedimiento sencillo y fácil en la oficina para reducir dramáticamente esos ‘pockets’ o bolsillos de grasa.
Ivonne:
¿Entonces, en algunos de estos casos no requieren ningún tipo de cirugía?
Dr. JRM:
Todos estos inyectables no requieren ningún tipo de recuperación. El paciente se lo realiza y al cabo del procedimiento puede reintegrarse a sus funciones.
Ivonne:
Bueno, antes de irnos me queda un minuto pero ustedes han sido nominados para un premio muy importante. Se llama el Face and Body Awards. Explíquenos de qué se trata. ¿Premian las mejores prácticas cosméticas y Puerto Rico está ahí?
Dr. JRM:
Sí, un jurado en los Estados Unidos de los practicantes de cosmética más importantes ha escogido, por regiones de Estados Unidos, las cuatro regiones importantes, cuáles son las prácticas que ellos entienden son las más importantes de todos Estados Unidos y por primera vez en la historia de estos premios Puerto Rico entra como finalista en la región sureste.
Ivonne:

Today in Prevention is to Live, we are talking with Oculoplastic Surgeon José Raúl Montes about cosmetic procedures that men prefer. Good Morning. Welcome.
Dr. JRM:
Good morning Ivonne and welcome.
Ivonne:
Times are changing and men are becoming more self-conscious about their appearance. You have to reveal to us what are those procedures that men are turning to and why.
Dr. JRM:
That’s why we are here. We will see a menu of what men are asking for, especially in facial procedures. We know that men are looking mainly to get rid of their bags in the lower eyelids. Why? Because it makes them look tired and older and it makes them look less competitive in the workforce; also in the upper eyelids. Here is an example of how a patient changes with eyelid surgery. These are procedures that are surgeries, but now we will show those that are injectables.
Botox® is still one of the substances that men seek to obviously improve their expression. We can see here treatments that improve the bags without surgery, injecting into the depression beneath the eye where the bag forms and makes the eye look tired This is injected not only into that depression; it also injected into the cheek creating a smooth transition between the eyelid and the cheek. It is not exclusive to older men; young men can also obtain a more rested appearance.
Men obviously do not like a double chin, because it makes them appear older, and the shirt and tie does not fit. These filers are being used to define the jaw, as well as complement neck treatments. Another thing that is the latest trend is the use of these facial injectables for the body, to fight those ‘love handles’ or fat in the abdomen. Kybella® is also being injected to dramatically reduce these ‘fat pockets’, a simple and easy procedure done in the office.
Ivonne:
So, in some of these cases surgery is not required?
Dr. JRM:
There is no downtime with any of these injections. The patient is done after the procedure and can resume his daily activities.
Ivonne:
Before we go, since I only have one minute left, I hear that you have been nominated for a major award. It is called the Face and Body Awards. Tell us what it is. Is it an award is given to the best cosmetic practices and Puerto Rico is there?
Dr. JRM:
Yes, a jury in the United States, comprised of major cosmetic practitioners, choses the best practices in each of the four major regions in the United States. They select the practices that they consider to be the most important in the United States. For the first time in the history of these awards Puerto Rico enters as a finalist in the southeastern region.
Ivonne:
