Telemundo Telenoticias: Botox & Fillers (April 2, 2014)
Ivonne: Here with us today is Oculoplastic Surgeon José Raúl Montes who will guide us in other uses of Botox and Fillers. People have the perception that Botox and Fillers are only used around the eyes and in the forehead. What is the reality?
Dr. JRM: The reality is that Botox was initially approved by the FDA for the glabellal lines, commonly known as brow lines (between the eyebrows). The purpose was to eliminate those lines that made people seem mad or tired. However, we all know that Botox is used in almost all facial areas. What is important is that if Botox is used in a precise manner, it could alter the emotions that we communicate to others which are not verbal. In other words, we can transform a person to look rested and happy, instead of fatigued and unhappy.
Ivonne: Let’s see some specific examples. Where do we start?
Dr. JRM: We can say that Botox is used to alter the shape and position of the eyebrows. In many cases, we see patients whose eyebrows are too low which turns the look into droopy eyelids. A moderate, delicate and artistic eyebrow elevation will result in the eye enhancement which makes the patient appear more relaxed and alert. It has been proven that the patient feels better.
Ivonne: Let’s see another example.
Dr. JRM: We can continue to talk about other uses for Botox, for instance to alter the smile or mouth’s position. However, on this example we see the use of a filler, instead of Botox. I bring this example because there are people that are afraid of getting injections or a procedure on the lips. What they do not know is that if these are injected in a delicate manner, mainly internally instead of only externally, it can enhance the shape of the lip without making it look bizarre.
Ivonne: On these bizarre cases that one observes, was it a bad application?
Dr. JRM: It is a combination of a poor application and exaggerated lip volume augmentation. Patients do not understand that the lip has a limited volume. You cannot enhance the lip if it genetically does not have a suitable volume. The lip’s position has to be reinverted, but never enlarged too much.
Ivonne: I have less than one minute left. In what other areas can these products be used to improve women’s and men’s appearance?
Dr. JRM: Fillers can be used on the earlobe. For example, the earrings are in a position that they do not look good. The earlobe is very flaccid. The ears may be injected with fillers in a safe and quick manner to return them to their youthful appearance. The hands are another area where fillers can be used. Many people complain that the hands are aging, and the tendons and blood vessels are very visible. Fillers can be injected in the hands so that these structures are not so visible, and the hands will look renewed.
Ivonne: We have, in fact, an example on screen. Thank you very much doctor for joining us, and above all for guiding us on all uses that exist for these substances.
Dr. JRM: It was my pleasure.
