We serve the Cosmetic Industry by conducting studies and trials on new products and new indications. Our diverse patient population and the inclusion of men, different age groups, and the LGTBQ+ community will definitely change the Cosmetic Landscape into one that is more Diverse, Inclusive, and Culturally rich.
Éste es el Research and Clinical Trial Center, que es una filial o un brazo de mi práctica: José Raúl Montes Eyes & Facial Rejuvenation. Yo llevo ya más de 25 años de práctica, pero después de los primeros 20 años de práctica, me di cuenta que muchos de los productos (y) procedimientos que yo hacía se estudiaban precisamente en las oficinas de muchos de mis colegas en Estados Unidos, a los cuales yo conocía porque íbamos a las mismas reuniones, etc. Me empecé a preguntar, pero, ¿por qué ellos están haciendo los estudios y yo no soy parte, si yo soy uno de los ‘top injectors’ de las compañías (igual que ellos)? Hablé con los directores médicos de las compañías y los CEOs. La verdad es que ellos se quedaban pensando y diciendo, ‘pero Puerto Rico … verdad, ustedes son parte de los Estados Unidos’ y yo (contesto): “sí y tenemos los mismos requisitos del FDA. Nosotros tenemos —muchos en mi práctica— una población grande de pacientes con todos los tipos de piel, así que nosotros podemos producir una data que para ustedes debe ser bien importante, por los requisitos que hoy día (son importantes) para del FDA.”
Así empezamos ya hace como dos años y medio o tres, con el primer estudio que es Volite, que es un skin booster —un inyectable de ácido hialurónico para la piel— y reclutamos en tiempo récord el número de pacientes y lo que ellos querían: diversidad de pieles en tono y hombres (que nadie conseguía, nosotros los conseguimos). Ellos de repente dijeron ‘caramba nos tomó tiempo darnos cuenta que ustedes podían ser un centro de investigación; ahora nos damos cuenta que ustedes son la joya de los centros de investigación para nosotros’. De ahí, pues nos dieron otro estudio más y las demás compañías siguieron el ejemplo y nos han seguido dando estudios. Ya hemos estado envuelto o en seis estudios clínicos, de los cuales tres se han completado y ya hay dos de esos productos que han salido al mercado ahora en el 2021 y se probaron aquí en Puerto Rico.
La misión de este Centro de Estudios Clínicos —obviamente— es cumplir con los requisitos de la investigación clínica de estos trials, pero también nosotros estamos generando empleos. Nosotros tenemos aquí una Directora que dirige el Centro, que es la Dra. Elizabeth Santos. También tenemos la asistente de ella, que es Melany Ortiz Rolón. Cada estudio genera para nosotros aproximadamente de $5 a $10 mil por paciente. Algunos estudios tienen 24; otros tienen 38 pacientes. Algunas de estas compañías también tienen en el presupuesto del estudio pagos para los pacientes que entran a los estudios (por visita). Así es que no solamente esto (pues) es una empresa que me da satisfacción, por lo que significa que yo esté aportando a los clinical trials, que la publicación de esos estudios que se sometan al FDA lleven nuestro nombre , sino que estamos generando empleos; estamos atrayendo pacientes que también reciben una remuneración por ser parte de esto.
This is our Research and Clinical Trial Center, a subsidiary of my practice: José Raúl Montes Eyes & Facial Rejuvenation. I have been practicing for more than 25 years, but after the first 20 years of practice, I realized that many of the products (and) procedures that I did were studied precisely in the offices of many of my colleagues in the United States, whom I knew because we attended the same meetings. I began to wonder, why were they doing the studies and was not being part of the process, if I am one of the companies’ top injectors (just like them)? I approached the companies’ medical directors and CEOs. In reality, it opened their eyes and they started thinking, ‘Puerto Rico … okay, is part of the United States’, and I replied: “yes, and we have the same FDA requirements. In my practice there is a large population of patients with all skin types, so we can produce data that must be very important to you, due to FDA requirements nowadays.”
This is how we started about two and a half or three years ago, with the first study being Volite, which is a skin booster —an injectable of hyaluronic acid for the skin— having recruited the number of patients and what they wanted in record time: diversity of skin tones and male patients (nobody was able to get them before us). Suddenly, they concluded that although it took them a while to realize that we could be a research center, we were actually the jewel of research centers for them. Afterwards, they gave us another study, and the other companies followed suit, and have continued to do so with additional studies. We have already been involved in six clinical studies, three of which have been completed, and from which two of the products have now hit the market in 2021, tested here in Puerto Rico.
Obviously, the mission of this Center for Clinical Studies is to meet the clinical research requirements for these trials, but we are also creating jobs. We have a Director Dr. Elizabeth Santos, who is assisted by Melany Ortiz Rolón. Each study generates approximately $5 to $10 thousand per patient for the office. Some studies have 24 patients; others have 38 patients. Some of these companies also have included in the budget remuneration per visit for every patient entering the studies. Even though having this Center gives me personal satisfaction, because I am contributing to the clinical trials, and though the result of which will be published and submitted to the FDA will bear our name, it is important that we are generating jobs, as well as attracting patients who receive compensation for their contribution.
