For more than 50 years, the Oculofacial Society has helped to establish its subspeciality in North America. Our work advancing the art and science of aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery in the face, eyelids, orbit (eye socket), and lacrimal system (tear pro- duction and drainage) gave us our original name, ASOPRS: the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Membership in this Society represents the gold standard of achievement in our field. We are all highly trained, expert specialists board-certified in ophthalmology. But members go even further. We have created the most rigorous set of requirements for membership, including a two-year ASOPRS-approved fellowship under the direct supervision of several current members, exams, research, and a thesis. Membership in ASOPRS means we have reached an elite level in the profession. We hold colleagues to very high standards: of training, education, professionalism, competency, and dedication to research, teaching, and advocacy. Earning membership in ASOPRS is synonymous with setting and maintaining the highest standards in oculofacial surgery. Put simply, we have the strictest membership criteria of any comparable professional society.
