Dr. JRM: Good morning Ivonne.
Yvonne: How are these numbers? What is the association between men and women looking for changes?
Dr. JRM: Traditionally, it was thought that the female population was the one searching for cosmetic procedures. This is changing dramatically in gigantic leaps. Nowadays, we have a male population that visits these offices, looking for cosmetic procedures. Why? It’s because men have realized that there is a variety of minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures, which can be done and they can return to work as quick as half hour after the procedure.
Yvonne: Tell us what is the procedure that most men appear to be looking.
Dr. JRM: Generally, it’s s the same as the women. A man or a woman comes to a surgeon’s office, basically wanting to look more rested. It is generally in the periocular area, around the eyes, where the man begins to notice these changes. These procedures are usually interrelated in this area.
Yvonne: And they are not striking?
Dr. JRM: We’re going to see here this example, a patient that I know him very well because he is my brother.
Yvonne: Your brother!
Dr. JRM: Yes. He basically told me: «Look, I want to look the way I feel, with the same energy, I want look well-rested» and I said well let’s see. We are going to do a procedure, a combination of substances in an injection in the lower eyelid. Instead of surgery, I’m going to inject in filler to improve that under-eye bag or dark circle which gives the face that tired appearance. Combined with Botox you can see here on the screen, how the shape of the eyebrows have changed, and he looks rested instead of sad.
Ivonne: And natural!
Dr. JRM: And natural!
Ivonne: Let’s have a look at the other case.
Dr. JRM: The next example is a patient who comes looking for the same. He says: «doctor, I am a young person (less than 40 years) and yet everyone asks me what is happening to me, that I look tired» and it’s in the eye area, specifically those dark circles or bags that are bothering him. I this patient: we can perform a medical procedure, and you go back to your work tomorrow, but he said to me «Wait, I can’t have surgery today» and I told him you will not have surgery. This is an injection with a substance, a filler in the lower eyelid, that when injected will remove that expression line and return the patient to a rested appearance.
Yvonne: He looks fairly young compared with the before photo.
Dr. JRM: This result has last 3 years.
Yvonne: Wow!
Dr. JRM: So it has great durability. The next one is a patient who is even younger, between 20 to 30 years old, that simply said «look doctor, I don’t want to appear mad and I am interested in improving my nasolabial folds or these lines that run to from the side of the nose to the mouth.» This filler that is injected will show the result, which last from 2 to 3 years, and the patient gets an immediate result. What we see here is a patient that you is basically looking to improve his expression lines.
Yvonne: Which we all have.
Dr. JRM: Exactly. With Botox the way we do this is to strive to make the patient improve his projection, to look more relaxed, happier, but basically without surgery. This is very important in the male population. Men want to look better, but don’t want to go through surgery. In this last case, he is a patient who is basically getting filler injections, such as polylactic acid or Sculptra, in several areas of the face and as you can see if you look carefully in the before and after pictures this person is regaining lost volume in the temporal midface area the cheeks and is improving his appearance around the eyes mouth, by only working in these other areas.
