MESSAGE OF THE PRESIDENT
Rosa Ileana Cruz Burgos, MD’80
President 2017-2018

Greetings from Sunny Downtown Puerto Rico! What an eventful year, one which will not be forgotten.

Hurricane Irma hit Puerto Rico a few days after our last medical convention; María came exactly two weeks later. This tragic series of events expanded the mission of the Society of Alumni to not only offer one of the most academically challenging conventions, provide a forum where classmates can meet and socialize but also direct their attention to help our medical students and our school cope with the challenges that these tragic events caused.

Although all of us have experienced serious difficulties, we are proud of the fact that we are able to celebrate our 59th Annual Convention, to be held August 31 thru September 3, 2018, at the San Juan Marriott & Stellaris Casino.

We are dedicating our Annual Convention to a very special colleague, Dr. Myrna Quiñones Feliciano, Class of 1980. Myrnita, as we like to call her, has dedicated all her life to the pediatric community, medical students and residents. She has demonstrated that with dedication, passion and empathy, we can make a difference. Dr. Quiñones has been the Medical Director for the Pediatric Hospital since February, 2011. During all these years she has been a key figure in making the Pediatric Hospital achieve the highest academic standards.

Starting this year, we are establishing a Special Recognition Award. This year the award is being presented to Dr. Milagros Martin de Pumarejo, Class of 1978, for her outstanding work and dedication to Puerto Rico’s children. Her work in the Emergency Care Unit of the Pediatric Hospital in the aftermath of hurricane María demonstrated her devotion to the wellbeing of our children.

I want to take this opportunity also to invite our colleagues from the mainland United States, especially those who are celebrating their Class Anniversaries to join our Convention. We promise it will be a very special weekend that includes an outstanding educational program and provides a social agenda that will give you the opportunity to share experiences with your fellow classmates.

Sincerely
Rosa Ileana Cruz Burgos, MD ‘80
